If your car’s registration has expired in Lexington, you can almost always still donate it. You do NOT have to renew the tags, pay back registration fees, or make the car roadworthy. For Bluegrass Wheels and Heritage for the Blind, what really matters is that you have a valid Kentucky title in your name, signed correctly. Once you donate, we arrange free towing across the Lexington Metro area and you still receive a tax receipt for your gift.
Here’s how it works in Kentucky: current registration isn’t required to transfer ownership to charity. As long as the title is clear and in your name, we can complete the donation whether the car is in Chevy Chase, Beaumont, Hamburg, the Northside, or out in Nicholasville, Georgetown, Versailles, or Richmond. Our towing partner picks up the vehicle even if it won’t start, hasn’t passed inspection, or hasn’t been on the road in years. After pickup, the vehicle becomes our responsibility. You simply notify the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (and your county clerk) of the transfer so future taxes, tickets, or fees are no longer tied to you.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Check that you have a valid Kentucky title in your name
Grab the title from wherever it’s stored — glove box, file cabinet, or a drawer at home in Lexington, Richmond, or Georgetown. It’s fine if the registration card is old or missing. The key is that the title shows your name and isn’t branded in a way that blocks transfer. If you’re missing the title, your county clerk can help you request a replacement.
2. Call or submit our simple Lexington donation form
Tell Bluegrass Wheels that your tags are expired and the car isn’t currently registered. We handle these situations all the time in Fayette County and surrounding areas. We’ll confirm the basics: year, make, model, approximate location, and whether you have the title. You’ll choose a convenient day and time window for free pickup anywhere in the Lexington Metro region.
3. Relax while we schedule free towing where the car sits
You don’t have to drive the car or risk getting ticketed with expired plates. Our towing partner comes to you — driveway in Beaumont, street parking near UK campus, storage lot in Winchester, or a farm road outside Versailles. The tow is free to you, even if the car doesn’t start, has flat tires, or has been sitting for years with no inspection.
4. Sign the title at pickup and hand over the keys (if any)
When the tow truck arrives, you’ll sign the Kentucky title where we indicate. The truck driver will load the vehicle and take your signed paperwork. Keys are helpful but not always required for problem vehicles. Once the truck pulls away, you’re effectively done with the car — no more worrying about tags, repairs, or future fees tied to it.
5. Notify the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet of the transfer
To fully protect yourself, you’ll report that you donated the vehicle to Bluegrass Wheels/Heritage for the Blind. That way, any future taxes, tolls, or tickets stop with you and follow the new owner. Your county clerk or the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet website can guide you through filing a simple notice of transfer or cancellation related to that vehicle.
6. Receive your tax receipt and know you’ve helped locally
After the vehicle is processed, we mail you a tax receipt. For most donors, this is at least $500. If the car sells for more, we’ll issue the IRS Form 1098-C information you need to claim the higher deduction. Your no-longer-legal-to-drive car helps fund services for people who are blind or visually impaired through Heritage for the Blind.
Potential complications to watch for
Missing or incorrect Kentucky title information
Tip: If the car is in your driveway in Lexington but the title is lost, in a previous name, or from another state, the process can slow down. Before scheduling pickup, visit your county clerk to request a duplicate title or update the ownership. Once your name is correctly on the title, we can usually move forward even with long-expired registration.
Existing liens or loans still showing on the title
Tip: If a bank or finance company is still listed as a lienholder, we can’t transfer the vehicle until that lien is released. Check the front of the title: if a lien is shown, contact the lender for a lien release letter. Your county clerk can then record the release and issue a clear title that you can sign over for donation without renewing registration.
Tickets, taxes, or fees tied to your name before donation
Tip: Any tickets, property taxes, or fees from when you still owned the car are usually still your responsibility even if you donate later. The donation stops future liability; it doesn’t erase past obligations. That’s why it’s important to notify the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and your county clerk of the transfer right after pickup so nothing new attaches to you.
Non-Kentucky titles on a car garaged in Lexington
Tip: If you moved to Lexington from another state and never re-titled the car here, we can often still accept it, but the steps can differ. Let us know which state issued the title and whether registration there has also lapsed. We’ll walk you through whether you can sign it directly to Bluegrass Wheels or need a quick update with that state first.
