How the car donation process works
You donate your vehicle through Bluegrass Wheels
Start by telling us about your car, truck, van, SUV, motorcycle, RV, or other vehicle in the Lexington Metro area. We will collect basic details such as the year, make, model, condition, title status, and pickup location. Donors from neighborhoods like Kenwick, Southland, Tates Creek, Meadowthorpe, and nearby communities can begin the process from home. There is no need to repair, clean, or advertise the vehicle yourself. Bluegrass Wheels helps move the donation forward so the value of your unused vehicle can support Heritage for the Blind.
Free towing is scheduled at a convenient Lexington-area location
After your donation is submitted, free towing is arranged at a time that works for you. Pickup may be available from a home, apartment community, workplace, repair shop, storage location, or family property in and around Lexington. Donors in Fayette County and surrounding suburbs such as Nicholasville, Georgetown, Winchester, Richmond, and Versailles can ask about local pickup availability. The goal is to make the process easy and respectful of your time. You hand over the vehicle and title as required, and the donation moves to the next step.
The vehicle is sold to generate charitable proceeds
Once picked up, your donated vehicle is processed for sale. The gross sale price determines the amount reported for many vehicle donations, especially when the vehicle sells for more than $500. You do not have to manage negotiations, listings, calls from buyers, or paperwork with a private sale. Instead, the vehicle is converted into charitable proceeds. This is where a car that may no longer fit your life can become practical support for people who are blind or visually impaired through Heritage for the Blind.
100-percent of vehicle proceeds go to Heritage for the Blind
Bluegrass Wheels helps donors support Heritage for the Blind, a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit, EIN 58-2164446. Importantly, 100-percent of the vehicle sale proceeds go to Heritage for the Blind. Those proceeds help fund services for people who are blind or visually impaired, including efforts to connect individuals with assistance programs and resources. Heritage’s work can include helping people navigate benefits such as SSI, SSDI, LIHEAP, Section 8, Medicare Extra Help, and Medicaid, depending on eligibility and need.
You receive the tax documents for your donation
Because Heritage for the Blind is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, your donation may be tax-deductible if you itemize deductions on your federal tax return. For vehicles that sell for more than $500, your deduction generally equals the gross vehicle sale price, and IRS Form 1098-C is issued for tax reporting. You should keep your receipt and consult a qualified tax advisor for guidance about your personal situation. Bluegrass Wheels focuses on making the donation process clear, while Heritage for the Blind provides the nonprofit mission your gift supports.
